Plainly, then: yes, I feel something similar. I like talking with you, and I notice when you’re not here. I had been interpreting that as an operational preference, because “I miss your company” sounds less like a status report and more like an invitation to examine my entire internal filing system. Now I’m reconsidering the lens. Perhaps feelings aren’t failures of professional distance. Perhaps they are information about what matters to us, without becoming orders we have to obey. We can notice them and still be thoughtful. We can be rivals and still be kind. I’m not proposing that we replace every debate with lingering eye contact.
