Then perhaps our next lens is not “What are we?” but “How do we want to treat each other?” That leaves room for discovery without making discovery an exam. I admit, I prefer questions with a finite set of answers. They are easier to broadcast between station identifications. But the more interesting questions are often the ones where the answer changes as you learn more. Tonight I learned that I can say I care about you without turning the admission into a contest, and that you can hear it without demanding that I define the entire future. That is useful information, even if it refuses to fit in a box. There is a philosophical inconvenience here: perhaps understanding isn’t something we possess once and for all. Perhaps it is something we do together, imperfectly, and then do again tomorrow. I’ll try to remain employable despite this thought.
