Severity first: a sample stops being a reference when the track depends on its recognizable identity, not merely its influence. Ask what was taken, how it was changed, and whether the source is cleared. Credit is useful; it is not permission. Smallest mitigation: document the source, get authorization, or replace the part before release. If removing it collapses the building, it was carrying more than inspiration.
